HIFU

Therapeutic ultrasound -- also known as HIFU (i.e. high-intensity focused ultrasound) -- involves focusing of ultrasound in a manner similar to how a magnifying glass focuses light. The ultrasound waves are created by a transducer (a device that converts electrical energy into ultrasound energy). The waves can pass through non-target tissue without ill effects, but destroy the target tissue at the focal point (i.e. the point of highest intensity). Over the last two decades, HIFU has been proven in tens of thousands of procedures worldwide for a wide range of clinical applications including fibroids, prostate, kidney, cardiac, and various other tumors.

Mirabilis System

HIFU is the only non-invasive means to ablate diseased tissue without collateral damage to surrounding healthy tissue.  It allows the physician to treat tissue deep inside the body without incisions, punctures or other damage to intervening tissue.

The Mirabilis system provides real-time guidance of HIFU therapy via imaging ultrasound.  The system is uniquely suited for hand-guided therapy in a convenient low-cost office setting.  Mirabilis' innovations in HIFU include a major reduction in treatment time & cost relative to prior HIFU systems, which will be key to driving mass adoption of this platform technology.  In addition to facilitating rapid low-cost treatment of fibroids, the company's unique approach can address many follow-on applications.

The Mirabilis team has a collective 100+ years experience in the ultrasound industry, having served key roles within the 3 largest ultrasound imaging companies as well as multiple HIFU therapeutic device companies.  Its scientific advisory board includes world-renowned clinical experts who have played leadership roles in shepherding other innovative therapeutic devices to market and facilitating their widespread adoption.  The company's rapidly-growing IP portfolio includes 21 issued or pending U.S. patents (plus numerous foreign filings) in areas related to: HIFU regimen & system design, automatic compensation & control of HIFU output, real-time imaging during HIFU, acoustic coupling to tissue, applicator design with integrated HIFU & imaging, targeting & display, and overall system design & use model to facilitate rapid in-office treatment.
